But it appears that August 2026’s documentaries didn’t get the memo. Over the past four weeks, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount+, and Hulu each came to the table with some compelling and fascinating nonfiction, some of which may end up on best-of-the-year lists.
Topping August’s list is a too-bizarre-to-believe reptile-trafficking exposé from the guy behind Tiger King, a whistleblower saga involving one of the world’s biggest airplane manufacturers, a tragic night of murder, and two music docs that couldn’t be more different.

Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear (Hulu)
The Blink-182 drummer’s epic survival story
If you think that you need to be a fan of Blink-182 or, specifically, its enigmatic drummer Travis Barker, to watch this documentary, you are sorely mistaken. Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear is less your standard biographical rock-star doc than it is an incredible story of a life at full speed and the inspirational overcoming of a life-changing tragedy—it will have you in tears by the end, regardless of your musical allegiances.
The wild 101-minute ride traces Barker’s life from Laguna Beach garbageman to a chance gig that locked him in as the drummer on the rocket ship ride of fame and non-stop touring with Blink. But the focus of the doc is the tragic 2008 plane crash that killed several of his best friends and left Barker with burns over most of his body. The rest of the doc delves deep as Barker recovers physically and mentally as he re-approaches life with renewed vigor. Louder Than Fear is a must-watch and features interviews from the likes of Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus, as well as Tommy Lee and Barker’s wife Kourtney Kardashian.

As true-crime documentaries go, it doesn’t get more tragic than this three-part series that looks at the well-publicized murders of four Idaho college students in November of 2022. But where The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare differs from the other docs that have been created about it is that this one keeps its focus where it belongs—on victims Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, rather than the man who killed them in their off-campus Moscow, Idaho, home.
Yes, the series does retrace the events of the night of the killing and the day the bodies were found—using stomach-sinking police bodycam footage, texts, and 911 calls—and it does outline how police tracked down and ultimately caught the killer, but the interviews do the heaviest lifting with the friends and families of the victims left reeling and seeking justice. The doc series has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour Live (Paramount+)

You know who loved this incredibly produced and fascinating documentary more than my Billie-obsessed teenager? Me. Fine, she was dancing in the front row of the theater when it was released back in May, but as someone fascinated with documentaries, especially behind-the-scenes ones, I must have watched Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour Live half a dozen times since it hit Paramount+ last month.
And no wonder it’s so good. Co-directed by Eilish herself and James Cameron(!), the 114-minute concert film goes inside a string of nights on Eilish’s world tour in 2025. Using state-of-the-art 3D cameras developed by Cameron’s Lightstorm company, it’s full of incredible behind-the-scenes footage—under-the-stage tunnel tours, platform numbers with Billie using a handheld camera, and even Cameron interviewing the superstar backstage—and loads of music. Of course, it’s not in 3D on Paramount+, but it’s a gorgeous work of art from one of film’s finest, nonetheless. It currently has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Tiger King director takes on reptile trafficking
The more episodes you watch of this absolutely bananas HBO Max docuseries, the more insane it gets—but what would you expect from the guy who brought the world Tiger King and Chimp Crazy? Eric Goode is back with a literal sack full of snakes in Monsters of God, a five-part series that delves deep into the billion-dollar world of the illegal reptile and exotic animal smuggling trade.
Much like Tiger King, the series focuses on the colorful cast of obsessed collectors and global kingpins involved, with a particular focus on smuggling pioneer Hank Molt and his arch rival, Florida dealer Tommy Crutchfield (who hate each other), as they share their experiences and stories on camera—including tales of suitcases full of reptiles and the federal agents tracking them down. It’s a slithering ride and the best docuseries of the month, as supported by its 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The final episode of the series streams September 3, after which you can binge the whole thing.
