Finding a mechanical watch that looks appropriate at work but can also handle outdoor activities isn’t always easy. Dress watches often lack the practical features found on sports models, while rugged watches can be bulky enough to feel out of place with everyday clothing. Seiko’s Alpinist collection has traditionally offered an alternative, combining relatively compact cases with mechanical movements and outdoor-inspired features.

The Seiko Prospex Land HBC006 builds on that formula with a distinctive anniversary design. Created to celebrate Seiko’s 145th anniversary, this limited-edition Alpinist features an Edo purple dial, gold-colored accents, and a 72-hour automatic movement. It carries a $900 U.S. retail price, with production limited to 7,000 pieces worldwide.
An Edo purple dial inspired by Japanese history
The HBC006’s defining feature is its purple dial, inspired by Edo purple, a traditional Japanese color associated with Tokyo’s history. Seiko ties the shade to its Tokyo roots, which date to 1881, when founder Kintaro Hattori opened a shop selling and repairing timepieces in the city’s Ginza district.

The dial retains the familiar Alpinist arrangement of wedge-shaped hour markers and Arabic numerals. Gold-colored accents on the Seiko logo and seconds hand complement the purple background, while matching stitching carries the color theme onto the leather strap.
Seiko has also included the Alpinist name beneath its logo, referencing the original Laurel Alpinist introduced in 1959. These details give the anniversary model its own identity without changing the recognizable layout of the collection.
The result is a watch that looks noticeably different from conventional black or green sports watches. Its color scheme is likely to be the deciding factor for buyers, particularly those who already appreciate the Alpinist design.
A 39.5mm case with useful everyday features
The HBC006 uses a stainless steel case measuring 39.5mm in diameter, 12.7mm thick, and 46.4mm from lug to lug. Those dimensions make it relatively compact compared with many modern sports watches, although the thickness may still be noticeable beneath a fitted shirt cuff.
Seiko applies a super-hard coating to the case for additional protection against everyday wear. A sapphire crystal covers the dial, with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface and a magnifier positioned over the date display.

LumiBrite on the hands and hour markers improves visibility in low-light conditions. The watch also includes a cow-leather strap secured by a three-fold clasp with push-button release.
These details give the HBC006 the practicality expected from an Alpinist while preserving the more traditional appearance of a leather-strap mechanical watch.
Seiko’s 6R55 movement offers a 72-hour power reserve
Inside the HBC006 is Seiko’s Caliber 6R55 automatic movement, which supports manual winding and provides approximately 72 hours of power reserve.
A fully wound watch can continue running for roughly three days without being worn. That is useful for someone who rotates between watches or removes the Alpinist over the weekend, reducing the likelihood of having to reset the time.

The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, contains 24 jewels, and includes a stop-seconds function for precise time setting. Its mechanical components can be viewed through the transparent screw-down case back.
Seiko specifies an accuracy range of +25 to -15 seconds per day. Buyers accustomed to quartz watches should keep that figure in mind, since mechanical movements generally require more tolerance for daily timekeeping variations.
The 6R55’s appeal lies in its traditional mechanical operation and extended power reserve rather than exceptional accuracy.
Outdoor features remain part of the Alpinist design
Although the HBC006 has a distinctive anniversary appearance, it retains several features associated with Seiko’s Prospex Land collection.
The watch offers 20-bar water resistance, commonly described as a 200-meter rating, along with a screw-down crown. It also includes a rotating inner compass ring, one of the Alpinist collection’s recognizable features.

The compass ring can assist with basic directional orientation when used with the sun and the appropriate technique. However, it should not replace dedicated navigation equipment when accurate directions are essential.
Seiko also specifies magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. Together with the sapphire crystal and coated stainless steel case, these specifications make the HBC006 suitable for regular wear and occasional outdoor activities.
One consideration is the leather strap. Although the watch has substantial water resistance, leather is not ideal for repeated swimming or prolonged exposure to moisture. Buyers who plan to use it frequently around water may prefer a compatible rubber or synthetic strap.
Limited to 7,000 pieces worldwide
The HBC006 belongs to Seiko’s third series of watches commemorating its 145th anniversary. Production is limited to 7,000 pieces worldwide, and the case back carries a limited-edition marking.
Seiko lists a recommended U.S. retail price of $900, with availability beginning in October 2026 through Seiko boutiques and selected retailers. Stock will depend on individual markets and dealers.

The anniversary connection may appeal to collectors, but limited production does not guarantee future resale value. With 7,000 examples planned, buyers should choose the HBC006 because they appreciate its design rather than expect it to become a valuable investment.
Should you buy the Seiko Prospex HBC006?
The Seiko Prospex Land HBC006 makes sense for buyers who appreciate mechanical watches with traditional styling and useful outdoor features.
At $900, the HBC006 is priced in line with Seiko’s standard-production Alpinists. The SPB507 also lists at $900, while the SPB503 and SPB505 list at $995, so the anniversary design doesn’t carry a premium. Buyers who prioritize accuracy may still prefer a quartz watch.
