HP’s Keyboard PC Is Shipping, and HP’s Own Laptop Undercuts It

HP put a whole Windows PC inside a keyboard. Then it priced that keyboard like a laptop that already comes with a screen and a battery. The idea is solid. The price is where it falls apart.

Buy it for staff at two fixed desks with monitors already there. Everyone else pays more and still supplies a screen. Seven months after the CES reveal, the concept with no price is a real product with a bill attached.

What you can buy right now

Two versions sit on HP’s US store. The big difference isn’t the chip. It’s the cable.

• Ryzen AI 5 PRO 340 (6 cores, 12 threads, up to 4.8 GHz), 16 GB memory, 512 GB SSD, Radeon 840M graphics, attached cable
• Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 (8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.0 GHz), 24 GB memory, 512 GB SSD, Radeon 860M graphics, detachable cable

Both run Windows 11 Pro with a three year warranty and Wolf Pro Security. Elsewhere HP builds the same body with up to 64 GB of memory and 2 TB of storage. Specs shift by country, so check your local list.

The NPU reaches up to 50 TOPS, which clears Microsoft’s bar for a Copilot+ PC. More AI work runs on the keyboard instead of in the cloud. Memory sits in replaceable modules, not solder.

March was HP’s original date, and stock turned up later and unevenly. Some pages still say Coming soon while resellers list stock. In New Zealand you can order today, though HP’s own NZ page won’t sell you one.

The cable you pick locks in your desk

Two USB-C ports sit on the back edge: one USB4 at 40 Gbps for your screen, one at 10 Gbps for the mouse dongle. Pick the built in cable model and both stay free, since power runs internally. Choose the detachable version and your power cable claims the USB4 port. HDMI screens need HP’s optional hub.

A 750 g computer on a shared desk walks off eventually. HP added a Kensington lock slot and sells an optional tethered cable. Overdue, and good to see.

Where the price stops making sense

Retailers list the entry model near $1,499 in the US, with a 24 GB version around $1,799. HP’s own store shows no price, so you go through a reseller or a sales rep. Close configurations swing by hundreds between sellers.

New Zealand shows an RRP near NZ$3,594 for a Ryzen AI 5 330 with 16 GB and 256 GB. Resellers list a 512 GB version around NZ$2,452 including GST. Get a quote before you accept an RRP.

Buyers hit the catch at checkout. This is business laptop money for a machine with no screen, and an EliteBook 6 G1a with a Ryzen AI 7 chip sits in the same band with a display attached.

Then add a monitor: a solid 27 inch USB-C panel runs around $250. A battery isn’t standard either, since HP sells the 32 Wh pack as a configure time option. Your real total lands above the sticker.

The hardware isn’t the issue. Pricing hasn’t caught up to the pitch, and the pitch was about taking gear off your desk.

Easy to open, easy to keep

Lift the deck and the parts come out: memory, SSD, Wi-Fi card, fan, optional battery, speakers. HP says a full keyboard swap takes under 10 minutes with no special tools. Year three is when that pays off.

Up to 75 percent of the plastic is recycled. Reads like a checkbox until you price a sealed replacement body. Hardware you can open ages cheaper.

Who should buy it and who should skip it

Two fixed desks, USB-C monitors at both, staff who never present in a meeting room. That’s your buyer. Call centres, computer labs, and shift desks fit exactly.

Mobile workers get nothing here. No screen means no email on a train and no quick fix in a room with an HDMI only projector.

Buying monitors as well? The math falls apart, because a laptop then wins on price and freedom.

Creative work needs a real graphics card. Integrated Radeon 840M or 860M won’t carry a 4K edit or a big local model.

Bottom line

HP fixed a real annoyance, moving the computer from behind the monitor into the thing your hands already rest on. It’s easier to repair than most work laptops.

Price is the wall. Until this costs clearly less than a laptop that brings its own screen, it’s a smart idea wearing the wrong sticker.
