The Gerber Gear Driver Keychain Multitool takes a more focused approach. Gerber markets the Driver as a 5-in-1 multitool built around Phillips and flathead bits, a magnetic bit socket, package opener, pry bar, and bottle opener.
That five-tool count takes a little explaining. Gerber does not explicitly spell out how the components add up to five tools, while REI also lists nail-pulling capability. Rather than getting caught up in the math, it is more useful to focus on what the Driver actually does. At 2.5 inches long and 1.4 ounces, it is designed to live on a keychain instead of taking up an entire pocket.
The Screwdriver Is the Main Attraction
Gerber includes Phillips and flathead bits that work with a magnetic bit socket built into the tool. This gives you two common driver types without permanently extending either bit from the body.
The small format will not provide the grip or leverage of a dedicated screwdriver, and two bits cannot replace a complete driver kit. The advantage is availability. For tightening a loose screw or making a quick adjustment, the driver already attached to your keys can be more useful than a full-size screwdriver that is sitting at home.
That makes the screwdriver system more than another feature added to increase the tool count. It gives the Driver a practical reason to earn a place on a keychain.
The Other Tools Keep Things Practical
Gerber also includes a package opener, pry bar, and bottle opener. REI also lists nail-pulling capability, although Gerber’s current feature list identifies this portion of the tool simply as a pry bar. It is more accurate to describe nail pulling as an additional capability of the pry-bar design than to claim it as a separate sixth tool.
The package opener provides a dedicated edge for getting into deliveries without adding a conventional knife blade. The pry bar offers an alternative to reaching for a knife tip, key, or screwdriver when you need a little leverage.
We have not independently tested the Driver’s pry-bar strength, so its capabilities should be kept in context. This is a compact EDC tool intended for small everyday jobs rather than heavy prying.
There Is No Conventional Knife Blade
Another important feature is what the Driver leaves out: a conventional knife blade.
That could make the Driver especially useful alongside an existing pocket knife. Rather than duplicating the blade you already carry, it adds screwdriving, package-opening, prying, and bottle-opening capabilities.
The lack of a conventional blade may also appeal to people who do not want another knife in their EDC. It should not automatically be considered acceptable everywhere, however. Workplace, school, venue, airline, and transportation rules can apply to tools beyond knives, so users should check applicable restrictions before carrying it.
At 1.4 Ounces, Carrying It Is the Point
Gerber specifies the Driver at 2.5 inches long and 1.4 ounces, while REI lists additional dimensions of approximately 1.6 inches wide and 0.4 inches thick.
Those numbers explain the Driver’s main appeal. It can remain attached to your keys or fit into an EDC organizer without requiring the pocket space of a traditional multitool.
Gerber also backs the product with a limited lifetime warranty. We have not independently tested long-term durability, including bit retention or wear around the magnetic socket, so the warranty should not be mistaken for evidence of how an individual tool will perform after years of keychain carry.
The portability tradeoff is straightforward. An extra 1.4 ounces may still be noticeable on a light keychain setup, but that weight gives you several basic tools without adding a full-size multitool to your pockets.
Do Not Get Hung Up on the Five-Tool Label
The Driver shows why multitool function counts can become confusing. Gerber calls it a 5-in-1 multitool, yet its product page lists two bits, a magnetic socket, package opener, pry bar, and bottle opener. REI also mentions nail-pulling capability. What matters more is what those components allow you to accomplish.
The Driver gives you screwdriving, package opening, bottle opening, and light prying in a compact package. It does not include pliers, scissors, a saw, file, or conventional knife blade, which makes its purpose considerably easier to understand than the marketing number suggests.
This is not an attempt to shrink an entire toolbox onto your keychain. It is a small collection of functions chosen around quick everyday fixes.
Who Should Buy the Gerber Gear Driver?
The Gerber Gear Driver Keychain Multitool makes the most sense for someone who wants a few practical tools available every day without dedicating a pocket to a conventional multitool.
It is particularly interesting if you already carry a pocket knife and want complementary capabilities rather than another blade. The Phillips and flathead bits handle basic screw adjustments, while the package opener and pry bar cover small jobs that might otherwise have you improvising with the wrong tool. If you regularly need pliers, several driver sizes, or tools for sustained repairs, a larger multitool or dedicated tool kit is the better fit.
