For over a year now, spy photographers have been chasing a low, heavily camouflaged JLR prototype around the Nürburgring and the Arctic Circle, and the internet collectively decided it had to be the next-gen Velar going electric. Turns out everyone was wrong.
That mystery mule was something far stranger: a Range Rover that isn’t an SUV at all. Say hello to the all-electric Range Rover GT.

Range Rover has spent since 1970 perfecting one shape, the upright luxury brick, so a low-slung fastback wearing the badge is actually a little disorienting. This isn’t a Velar replacement either; it’s a fifth standalone member of the family, sized lower than an Evoque but stretching about as long as a Range Rover Sport.

The GT is also the first vehicle to ride on JLR’s new EMA platform, complete with a flat floor and all-wheel drive. It launches as a pure EV built at Halewood in the UK, with a hybrid variant promised later in the lifecycle for the electrically hesitant.

Inside, the traditional leather-and-wood gentleman’s club treatment is completely gone. It has been replaced by a woven textile dash, recycled materials throughout, and a small ovoid steering wheel with the drive selector relocated to the column.

A slim driver display, a central OLED touchscreen, and a standard head-up display handle the digital duties, and physical buttons are nearly extinct ( and that means climate controls now live on the screen). Frameless doors, a full glass roof, and a 2+2 layout round it out, though a three-seat rear bench is coming for those with more friends.

Here’s what Range Rover hasn’t told us: the battery size, output, range, or price. Anything you’ve read on those fronts is educated guesswork.
Managing director Martin Limpert claims the GT will deliver capabilities “no conventional GT can match.” We’ll have to wait and see how that pans out. Prototypes are in final testing now, full specs land later this year, and production kicks off in 2027.
