Some grills get reinvented every couple of years. The Weber kettle isn’t one of them. George Stephen welded the first one together in 1952, and the formula, a porcelain-enameled steel bowl on a tripod, has barely changed since. Because when you nail it on the first try, you simply leave it alone.

So when Weber dresses up that 70-plus-year-old silhouette for a holiday weekend, it’s definitely worth a second look. The Salute to Service Kettle is a limited-edition tribute to U.S. service members, and it’s landing right as the 4th of July fires up grills across the country.

Now, let’s get right out of the way. This is a charcoal grill – which is the only way we know how to grill around these parts. Gas has its conveniences, but nobody ever bragged about the convenient flavor of their burgers.

Weber basically wrote the book on charcoal cooking, and the kettle is still the most democratic way to do it right. Cheap to run, simple to use, and capable of a sear no propane burner can fake.

The makeover trades Weber’s usual black for a deep, military-inspired olive-green porcelain enamel, accented with white American flag decals on the lid. The handles, dampers, ash catcher, legs, and wheels all go blacked-out.

Under the fresh paint, it’s pure Weber. You get 363 square inches of grate, enough for 13 burgers or a full spread for 6 to 8, plus adjustable lid and bowl dampers for dialing in your heat.

Cleanup runs through the brand’s One-Touch system, which sweeps ash into the catcher with one swipe of the lever. And it’s backed by a 10-year warranty, because Weber fully expects you to still be grilling on this very unit in 2036.
