If you look at the Netflix Top 10 for the U.S. at the moment, you’re still likely to see a scathing documentary series about Michael Jackson, Tina Fey and her pals gallivanting around vacation locations, and more than a couple true-crime docs vying for your time. Not to mention the World Cup trying to coax you out to a crowded sports bar. But if you’re looking for something new to watch on Netflix that isn’t any of those things, you’ve come to the right place.
For this weekend, I’ve pulled a survival competition series that my wife and I have been glued to, the long-overdue Netflix debut of two heavy-metal animated morons who’ve made a comeback recently, and a dark and twisty new crime thriller about a man searching for his son.

Outlast: The Jungle
Giving new meaning to the word “teamwork”
If you like survival series like The History Channel’s Alone combined with the personalities and social dynamics of Survivor, then I recommend giving Netflix’s Outlast: The Jungle a try. A spin-off of the 2023 survival series Outlast, this new incarnation trades the Alaskan wilderness for the sweltering and unforgiving landscapes of the Panamanian jungle. Outlast: The Jungle premiered on June 10, when we saw its 16 strangers dropped in to compete for the show’s $1 million prize.
After dividing into three teams, Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie, with each given different survival “resource packs” (one gets fire-making gear, one gets hunting equipment, and one gets shelter materials, for example), the goal is simple—survive, outwit, and outplay the other teams. The only catch is that the prize can only be claimed by a team, no individuals. Teams can negotiate trades, players can defect to other teams, there’s lying, stealing, sabotage, you name it—and it’s a blast.
The cast has shifted slightly from its usual Outlast blend of pure survivalists to include outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, and weekend-warrior types. Triathlete Leiya Pillitteri and lifelong hunter Maddy Jones are among them, as is rock-climbing dive master Abby Chu and former NFL player Wes Saunders. It’s a fresh new take on the series that’s already topped Netflix’s U.S. TV chart.

Beavis and Butt-Head
Heh-heh-heh, heh-heh-heh
It’s actually harder than you’d think to describe Beavis and Butt-Head, the iconic MTV adult-animated series from the ’90s that rotted more of my brain than I’d care to admit. To many of a certain generation, I could probably just say that it’s that show where two dimwitted slackers sat on their couch making fun of music videos and going “Heh-heh-heh” and “Huh-huh-huh,” and they’d immediately get it. But for the uninitiated, allow me to elaborate.
Created and voiced by Mike Judge, the guy who also brought us King of the Hill and Idiocracy, Beavis and Butt-Head are two metal-obsessed morons from Highland, Texas. Each episode they stumble into low-grade mayhem, giggling and saying how much everything sucks along the way. You might remember Cornholio—Beavis’s sugar-fueled alter ego who pulls his shirt over his head. For a more recent sign of its cultural significance, Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day played the two idiots in a now-classic SNL sketch in 2024.

I Will Find You
A convicted murderer searches for his son and his freedom
First of all, it’s really great to see the Emmy-winner Britt Lower outside the confines of Severance and the equally-superb Sam Worthington not mo-capped into a giant blue Na’vi in Avatar. With that out of the way, the pair co-star in Netflix’s chart-climbing I Will Find You, the latest adaptation of a Harlan Coben novel as part of his exclusive, multi-year deal with Netflix (other titles include Run Away, Missing You, and Fool Me Once).
This one is tense—David Burroughs (Worthington) is a former law professor serving a life sentence for murdering his own young son, a crime he insists he didn’t commit. Then his snooping journalist ex-sister-in-law, Rachel (Britt Lower), turns up one day with a recent photo that appears to show his son alive, and David breaks out of prison to find him and clear his name. It’s a fast-paced fugitive hunt as David and Rachel try to stay a step ahead of the feds, and the dark conspirators behind David’s son’s disappearance, on their tail.
I Will Find You has already hit No.1 on Netflix’s U.S. chart while trending in 90-plus countries, with Rotten Tomatoes having it at around 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.
