If you’re looking to stay under the $40,000 mark, its only true competitors are the Hyundai Elantra N, Honda Civic Si, and Subaru WRX. While those are all fantastic vehicles, we think that Volkswagen finds the best balance for a one-car garage.

Yes, the higher trims come with some desirable luxuries, but we think that the GTI best lives up to its formula in base form. Besides, Volkswagen includes a ton of standard features that make it very easy to live with, including things like heated front seats, automatic climate control, and adaptive cruise control. As the hot hatchback was refreshed last year, you also get a larger infotainment screen alongside some improved tech features.

Under the hood of the GTI sits a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts down 241 horsepower. It isn’t the most powerful car in its class, but it has more than enough pep to get going quickly. As is the case with most hot hatches, this power is sent exclusively to the front wheels. Unfortunately, Volkswagen has discontinued the six-speed manual option for their little hot hatch. Luckily, the seven-speed dual-clutch you do get is pretty fantastic.

What makes the GTI so great is that it has so much personality. While cruising along on your commute feels effortless, thanks in no small part to its great ride, you always get the feeling that it is ready to take off. When you do put your foot down, preferably along some twisty sections of road, the Volkswagen comes alive. It is a veritable go-kart. The only thing we think could be improved is the steering feedback.

Being a car that you’re going to drive every day, it’s good to know that the GTI doesn’t guzzle gas. Even with all that eagerness, the EPA rates it for 27 miles per gallon combined.

More versatile than any sports car

From behind the wheel, the GTI is always capable of putting a smile on your face. It takes more than just performance to be a successful hot hatch, though. The Golf is all about versatility, with enough room to carry you and a couple of passengers as well as some cargo in the trunk. The refreshed model also comes with some nice standard tech features that make it feel more upscale than its price would suggest.

Sleek and spacious on the inside

For a car that looks so small, the cabin of the GTI feels surprisingly airy. The neat layout of the center console and the dashboard makes it feel like there is a lot of space up front. While legroom is a little limited, you can pretty easily fit two adults in the back as well. The obvious benefit of any hatchback is the extra cargo space, and the trunk of the Golf is larger than the likes of the Civic Si or Elantra N.

Volkswagen’s design department can never be accused of going overboard, with most of their vehicles being quite reserved. Apart from a few contrasting bits of red trim, and the GTI badge on the steering wheel, the Golf plays it fairly safe. Materials used throughout the cabin are pretty nice, but there are some cheap plastics that give away the hatchback’s budget-friendly ideology.

The silly steering wheel buttons are finally gone

One of the most infuriating design decisions ever made was to put touch-sensitive sliders on the steering wheel. Thankfully, Volkswagen has come to their senses and replaced these with real buttons. This makes controlling the infotainment system, displayed on a generous 12.9-inch screen, a whole lot easier, reducing accidental inputs.

The infotainment system is pretty advanced and comes with a voice assistant that works reasonably well. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as well. You also get a fully-digital 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Other niceties on offer higher up the trim ladder include a heads-up display, ambient interior lighting, and a Harman/Kardon sound system.

If you’re a driving enthusiast, and you don’t have a ton of money to spend on your next car, the Golf GTI is just about perfect. It is priced very reasonably, especially when you consider its long list of standard features, and it is practical enough to live with day-to-day. For the money, there are also very few cars that offer the same level of fun. It’s a car that feels like it doesn’t compromise on the things that matter most.
