Sony’s ECM-AX10 plugs into a phone’s USB-C port to record the sound around a scene. The $249.99 microphone has four omnidirectional capsules and three recording modes, giving phone filmmakers a way to capture a street performance, a game or a travel stop with more than a conventional stereo soundtrack.
Sony announced the microphone on October 8 and has opened US preorders. The company also has a feature on its roadmap that matters if you shoot everything in 4K: 4K recording in its Spatial Audio Video Tool app is planned from December 2026 onward.

Three ways to record the same scene

The ECM-AX10’s spherical microphone module uses four capsules facing different directions. In Ambisonics mode, it works with Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool to prepare spatial-audio videos for Eclipsa Audio playback on YouTube. That makes the recording and export workflow part of the purchase decision, along with the microphone itself.
Binaural mode takes a different approach. Sony processes the recording for a three-dimensional listening effect over headphones, including when the playback service does not support Eclipsa Audio. Stereo mode provides the familiar option for videos watched through headphones or speakers. It works with general recording and video apps as well as Sony’s software.
A basketball court is a useful example of the difference in intent. The bounce of the ball, players moving around and people reacting nearby all contribute to the scene. Sony’s pitch is to preserve that surrounding atmosphere. A creator choosing a recording mode needs to think about how the audience will hear the finished video.
Check the phone and the app first

The microphone weighs about 24 grams and connects directly over USB-C. Sony lists iOS 18 or later and Android 14 or later as baseline requirements, but an operating-system version and a matching port are only the starting point.
Its tested-phone list identifies specific devices and software versions checked with the microphone and Spatial Audio Video Tool. Sony says recording quality can vary with the phone and compatibility can change. Check the exact combination before ordering, especially if this will be part of a regular filming setup.
The dedicated app handles video capture, clip review, simple edits and export for the spatial workflow. Some of those functions require the app. If you need 4K recording in Sony’s app, support is still planned for December 2026 onward.
A US preorder for phone filmmakers
