Grand Seiko releases boutique exclusives at an almost alarming rate, and while they’re all well done with their beautiful dials, few of them really stop the scroll in our inbox. This one did just that, and not because of the dial (though we’ll get there).

This watch stopped us in our tracks because there is only one way to buy it, and it involves a boarding pass. Meet the SBGA527, a 50-piece Spring Drive exclusive to two Ben Bridge boutiques in Honolulu.

Back in July 2000, the Japanese beach town of Shirarahama and Honolulu’s Waikiki made their long-running kinship official with a “Goodwill Beach City Relationship.” Both are white-sand beaches facing the same Pacific, separated by 4,000-some miles of it.

That shared ocean is the entire inspiration for the dial. The textured blue surface carries a fine, feathered grain that shifts with the light, swinging from a deep press-photo navy to something that feels a bit closer to washed denim. Of course, that all sounds and feels like classic Grand Seiko behavior, and honestly, it’s probably the best part of owning one of these.

A blued seconds hand sweeps over the top, and thanks to the Spring Drive movement underneath, it glides rather than ticks.

Underneath the island story is Grand Seiko’s proven everyday-sports recipe. The 40mm 62GS-style case and matching bracelet are rendered in High-Intensity Titanium, with the brand’s mirror-perfect Zaratsu polishing on full display, plus a box sapphire crystal and 100m of water resistance.

Powering it all is the caliber 9R65, the workhorse Spring Drive. You get 72 hours of reserve, a pretty ridiculous rating of plus or minus 15 seconds per month, and a power reserve indicator sitting at 8 o’clock.
