The storefront where Harvey Milk sold film and strategized his historic run for San Francisco supervisor has found a fitting second act.
Today it’s home to Queer Arts Featured, better known as Queer AF: part gallery, part boutique, and part community gathering space for queer artists who are tired of waiting for someone else’s invitation.
Rather than freezing the space as a shrine, the founders keep it buzzing with rotating exhibitions, open mics, gender-affirming clothing swaps, and craft nights.
Visitors can also expect to learn about Milk, the White Night Riots, and see walls of unapologetically queer art, some of which is for sale.
Don’t miss the handmade ruby slippers by one of the founders, proof that there really is no place like home.
Queer AF is at 575 Castro Street, between 18th and 19th Streets.
You can either visit the boutique to shop, browse, admire the artwork, or attend a scheduled event.
Events are offered on a sliding scale, so no one is turned away for lack of funds.
