Grand Seiko Revives the Numeral Dial That Kicked Off Its Hand-Wound Era

Grand Seiko has spent the last decade turning dials into landscapes. It’s literally the brand’s entire identity. Snowflakes, birch forests, washi paper… basically, if it exists in the Japanese countryside, odds are it’s been rendered (and beautifully executed at that) on somebody’s wrist. And that’s what makes the brand’s newest release so interesting.

There’s no texture story here at all and that’s sure to get the community talking. It’s just a flat navy dial and a set of numerals with a quarter century of history behind them. Meet the Grand Seiko SBGW325.

Rewind to 2001, when Grand Seiko released the SBGW003. It was the first watch to carry a hand-wound 9S movement (the Caliber 9S54). But enthusiasts will recall that its party piece wasn’t the engine, though. It was the dial’s raised Arabic numerals, which, as we’ve outlined, is an anomaly for a brand that lives and dies by polished baton markers.

That typeface was penned by Nobuhiro Kosugi, the legendary designer behind the modern 44GS, drawn specifically to sit in visual harmony with the Gothic GS signature at 12 o’clock. Twenty-five years later, and it’s finally back in action.

The SBGW325 swaps the original’s cream-and-gold scheme for a matte navy dial inspired by Japan’s traditional indigo-dyeing craft, with sculpted silver numerals, Dauphine hands, and a single hit of gold on the seconds hand and logo.

The 37.3mm Zaratsu-polished steel case is equally restrained, measuring 11.7mm thick and 44.3mm lug-to-lug under a vintage-style box sapphire crystal.

Inside beats the Caliber 9S64, the direct descendant of that original 9S54, now good for 72 hours of reserve and +5 to -3 seconds per day. The indigo theme even extends to the strap, a crocodile number hand-dyed via the painstaking hon-ai natural dyeing process, with a casual grey calf spare in the box.

Unfortunately, Grand Seiko rates this thing as merely splash resistant so we’re not quite sure how it’ll stack up as true everyday piece.

Limited to 600 pieces worldwide, the SBGW325 lands in October 2026 exclusively through Grand Seiko Boutiques, priced at $5,800, which makes it one of the more attainable Grand Seikos of the year.
