Most walkers leave Skaftafell aiming at Svartifoss, but the trail offers an earlier surprise. Hundafoss drops through Bæjargil in a narrow, green-sided gorge, giving the uphill approach a quieter prelude before the main waterfall’s basalt-column setting.
Its smaller scale is part of the charm. Summer foliage can partly hide the first angle, while a clearer side view makes the slender fall and dark gorge easier to read. Hundafoss feels less like a roadside checklist stop and more like a detail revealed by following the trail.
The waterfall works best as part of the Svartifoss walk, not as a separate South Coast detour. Continue only when trail conditions, weather, daylight, and the group’s walking margin support the wider Skaftafell plan.
Start from the Skaftafell visitor area and follow the marked route toward Svartifoss. Hundafoss is a pause along that walk. Check current Vatnajökull National Park trail information and Icelandic weather conditions before setting out.
