The James Brand first rolled the Barnes off their assembly line back in 2021, when it became the Portland brand’s first integral folder. Of course, it also quickly became one of the best-looking releases as well. It’s already worn a few dressed-up variants, including a Damasteel blade and FatCarbon inserts, but TJB decided to do something a bit different this time around.

The latest Barnes knife reaches for a handle material you’d sooner find in a sweater drawer than your pockets: wool.

The inserts on the show side and along the spine are made from Solidwool, a UK composite that’s half wool, half bio-resin. No petroleum, no plastic, and no synthetic fiber, which makes it a rare bio-based stand-in for the carbon and Micarta most brands reach for. It’s also reportedly just as strong and stable, though we haven’t tested ourselves.

Wool on an EDC knife definitely sounds like a recipe for a soggy handle, but the resin binding means it behaves like any other composite scale, rather than your favorite scarf. The better trick is what the fibers do to a limited run. Because they’re naturally irregular, no two inserts come out looking the same. So a knife already capped at 24 units turns into 24 genuine one-offs, which is pretty rad for collectors.

Strip away the novelty and there’s actually a really serious knife here. The handle is CNC-machined from a single billet of 6AL-4V titanium, the whole point of an integral build: fewer parts, no backspacer, no seams, with the frame lock cut directly into the body. There’s even a hardened steel insert at the lockface, so the titanium should wear better over time.

Up top sits a 3.5-inch drop point in Böhler M390, the Austrian super steel that holds an edge and fends off rust about as well as anything you can buy. It rides a ceramic ball-bearing pivot, opens off dual thumb studs, and the whole package measures 7.8 inches at 4.6 ounces. Light, for something carved out of solid titanium.

Every Barnes also ships with TJB’s Clovis-stamped coin, which is a nod to the old superstition that gifting a knife cuts the friendship unless the recipient “pays” for it. The way it works is pretty simple. The recipient will hand the coin back, the bond stays intact, and everyone avoids a centuries-old jinx over a pocketknife.

The James Brand wraps its integral titanium Barnes in a 50/50 wool and bio-resin composite, and because no two inserts look alike, all 24 examples are effectively one of one.
