Love it or hate it, pumpkin spice owns the fall season. It’s a popular latte flavor at coffee shops like Starbucks and practically fills an entire aisle at Trader Joe’s.

While we haven’t (yet) joined the pumpkin spice craze, we dipped our toes into the mania upon discovering Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup at a local liquor store. This Pumpkin Spice Martini recipe is our first (but not last) experiment with the seasonal syrup, and it’s a doozy.

This decadent cocktail channels everything people love about the flavor (allspice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and a hint of pumpkin) into a creamy martini. Sweet without being cloying, it tastes like dessert because that’s essentially what it is. This drink is rich, warming and pleasantly sweet. It’s almost like a more sophisticated autumnal cousin of Christmas’ eggnog.

The Pumpkin Spice Martini is a modern dessert cocktail that’s built on vanilla vodka, Irish cream liqueur, Kahlua, pumpkin spice syrup and half-and-half. Despite the name, it has little in common with a classic gin or vodka Martini. The ‘martini’ moniker refers to the glass as opposed to the drink itself.

Our recipe leans on the same flavor trio that makes a White Russian work: vodka, coffee liqueur and cream. Irish cream adds body and sweetness, while pumpkin spice syrup brings seasonal warmth. And, like the classic pumpkin pie spice blend, no actual pumpkin product is required.

Fun Fact
Pumpkin pie spice is older than you might think. McCormick started selling its OG pumpkin pie spice blend in 1934.

Pumpkin Spice Martini Ingredients
Our Pumpkin Spice Martini recipe calls for the following ingredients: coffee liqueur, Irish cream liqueur, vanilla vodka, pumpkin spice syrup, half-and-half, pumpkin pie spice and ice cubes (not pictured). Candy pumpkins are optional but recommended. | Image: ©2foodtrippers

You need five liquid ingredients to craft this cocktail. You probably have the three spirits in your liquor cabinet. Since you can easily find half-and-half and pumpkin pie spice at most grocery stores, the pumpkin spice syrup is the only item that may require a special purchase.

  • Coffee Liqueur: We use Kahlua in this and other cocktail recipes. The rum-based coffee liqueur from Mexico adds depth and keeps the Pumpkin Spice Martini from tasting one-notey. Tia Maria is a fine substitute if you already have a bottle of that coffee liqueur.
  • Irish Cream Liqueur: We use Baileys in this recipe, but any Irish cream will work. Some brands release a pumpkin spice edition in the fall if you want to double down on the pumpkin spice flavor.
  • Vanilla Vodka: We use Absolut Vanilia vodka in this recipe. You can use another brand like Smirnoff, which may be easier to find in some areas. You can alternatively use plain vodka if that’s what you have, though you’ll need to add a splash of vanilla extract (about 1/4 teaspoon) if you go that route.
  • Pumpkin Spice Syrup: We use Monin pumpkin spice syrup in this recipe. Not only do we like the syrup’s taste, but we also like that Monin doesn’t add artificial flavorings to its syrups. You can also use another brand like Torani.
  • Half-and-Half: Half-and-half gives the cocktail a creamy texture. You can alternatively use whole milk to make a lighter cocktail or heavy cream to make a richer cocktail.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice: We made a pumpkin pie spice blend with ground allspice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. You can either do the same or buy a pre-made blend at the grocery store.
  • Pumpkin Candy (optional garnish)
  • Ice cubes (for shaking)

Ingredient quantities are detailed in the printable recipe card below.

Pumpkin Spice Martini Mise en Place
You don’t need any special tools to craft a Pumpkin Spice Martini at home. All you need is a cocktail shaker, a cocktail strainer and a jigger. | Image: ©2foodtrippers

Step 1: Measure the coffee liqueur, Irish cream liqueur, vanilla vodka, pumpkin spice syrup and half-and-half. Pour each liquid into the shaker. We use a Japanese jigger to measure the liquids to ensure accurate measurements and avoid spillage.

Step 2: Drop a handful of ice into the shaker and vigorously shake until the liquids are chilled and combined (approximately 20 seconds). We use a Boston shaker for this step since it doesn’t leak and is easy to clean.
