A Red Flag Warning will take effect at 7 a.m. Sunday for the northern Sacramento Valley, including the Redding area, Red Bluff and the Interstate 5 corridor, as gusty north winds and low humidity bring critical fire weather.

A separate Red Flag Warning remains in effect today for the eastern Sierra and far northeastern California.

Northern Sacramento Valley: Sunday to Monday

The National Weather Service in Sacramento issued the warning at 10:16 a.m. PDT Saturday.

It runs from 7 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. PDT Monday.

Areas: Shasta Metro, the northern Sacramento Valley in Tehama County, and Central Glenn County along Interstate 5.

Winds: north to northeast at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of 30 to 40 mph. The strongest winds are expected Sunday morning.

Humidity: 15 to 25 percent.

Impact: any fire that starts will spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The same cold system is also forecast to bring mountain rain, high-Sierra snow and a chance of isolated thunderstorms Sunday and Monday.

Eastern Sierra and Northeast California: Today

NWS Reno’s Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. PDT tonight.

In California, it covers Southern Mono County, Northern Mono and Alpine counties, and far southern Lassen County.

Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust to 35 to 45 mph.

Minimum humidity will be 14 to 22 percent.

Even where humidity is not as low, gusty winds and dry conditions can cause fires to grow rapidly before crews can contain them.

NWS Reno flagged the Saturday warning for the Alpine and Mono eastern Sierra earlier this week.

Safety Reminders

A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or will shortly.

Avoid anything that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, including yard work, target shooting and campfires.

Do not burn debris, and follow local fire restrictions.

Secure trailer chains so they do not drag and spark on the road.

Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts, and be ready to leave if told to evacuate.
