There’s a particular flavor of audiophile who looks at a turntable from 1985 and thinks “that, but make it $30,000.” And if anyone knows who that particular person is, it’s the folks at Bang & Olufsen.
Last year, the Danish brand brought its Beogram 3000 back as the recreated Beosystem 3000c, which was paired with a set of modern Beolab 8 speakers. Now it returns in a new “Dune Grey” finish, and while the colorway is the whole story here – it’s certainly a beautiful one.
Just to be clear, the Dune Grey edition is, functionally, last year’s system with a different paint job. Same turntable, same speakers, same $30,000.
That said, it’s a very good paint job. The matte aluminum now carries a warm bronze cast against dark walnut, a palette B&O credits to the Nordic coastline.
What you’re actually paying for is the restoration. B&O doesn’t build new 3000c turntables. It sources original Beogram 3000 units from the ’80s, ships them to Struer, Denmark, and rebuilds them by hand with a machined walnut back cover, new aluminum panels, and a modern cartridge.
The headline trick is the tangential tonearm, a design B&O first pioneered in 1972. Instead of swinging in an arc like most record players, it tracks straight across the groove and creeps inward as the record spins.
Now, the Beolab 8 speakers do the heavy lifting on the modern side. They handle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 and stream from AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Google Cast, and Tidal, so you can spin a record one minute and queue a playlist the next.
