The Netflix machine keeps on pumping out shows. One of the streamer’s notable advantages over its competition is its ability to turn licensed shows into hits. Look at what happened with Suits, a show that soared to new popularity in 2023 on Netflix despite having concluded its run on the USA Network in 2019.
I’m not sure whether this mysterious MGM+ show will become the next Suits, but it’s already trending in the top 10 and should be on your list of programs to watch this weekend in the U.S. Speaking of the top 10, a supernatural drama about a terrifying sea creature has been one of the streamer’s most popular shows this month. Finally, my top selection of the week is the return of a sweet rom-com.

From
Will they ever escape?
From is the most Stephen King-coded show to exist without being based on a novel by King himself. Instead, John Griffin is the mastermind behind this underrated sci-fi thriller. From revolves around an unnamed American town—sometimes called Fromville by fans—from which no one can escape. Once someone enters this town, they become trapped with the rest of the residents. Anyone who tries to drive out of town eventually loops back to it.
The natural question to ask is: Why can’t these people leave? It’s one of two central mysteries in From. The second mystery plays out more like a nightmare. At night, unsettling creatures inhabit the surrounding woods and wreak terror. If you can’t leave town and must avoid the dangers lurking nearby, how do you survive? Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) tries to keep order in the township as the sheriff, but even he can’t explain this supernatural phenomenon.
The idea of a trapped town certainly feels like King’s Salem’s Lot or Under the Dome. However, the better comparison is Lost because of the many twists that are revealed and puzzles that need solving. The first three seasons are now available to stream on Netflix, and our HTG has a guide to From’s 10 essential episodes to watch before season 4.

Below
Watch out for the sea
The creature feature is a proven Hollywood formula. From Godzilla and King Kong to Jaws and Frankenstein, creature features have terrified audiences for decades. Sticking with Jaws, creature features set at sea scare me the most because they tap into the fear of the unknown. What is lurking beneath the waters?
Below is Netflix’s latest addition to the creature feature genre. It’s not an intense shark movie. Instead, it’s a six-episode limited series with a mysterious creature lurking underwater. Someone looking for answers is Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett), a fisherman in the fictional Canadian town of Snook’s Arm. Calvin had always been wary of the water after the mysterious death of his father. As an adult, Calvin, a father of three, now must work to protect his family from a monstrosity beneath the water.
A subplot follows the town’s residents as they fight to keep their land from a corporation seeking to profit from it. There are clear similarities between Jaws and Below, particularly in how those in power handle the creature. However, Below leans much more into the supernatural, which might turn the biggest skeptics into believers.

Nobody Wants This season 3
The unlikely couple takes another step
Nobody Wants This is a true two-hander. On one side is Kristen Bell, who plays Joanne, a sex-positive podcast host who hasn’t had great luck in the dating world. On the other is Adam Brody, who plays Noah Roklov, a rabbi (nicknamed “hot rabbi”) with major love-life problems. In season 1, Joanne and Noah hit it off, spending the rest of the episodes determining whether they’re compatible. The duo finally commits to each other.
Season 2 reaffirms their commitment to making the relationship work. Like all good relationships, the next step is moving in together, which is where the third season picks up. I’m prepared to see some fights over their new setup, hilarious interactions with their family members, and clashes between Joanne and Noah’s overprotective mother, Bina (Tovah Feldshuh).
If you were to tell me the actors who played Veronica Mars and Seth Cohen would one day be in a relationship on television, my teenage self would never have believed it. Nobody Wants This relies on the innate chemistry between Bell and Brody to do most of the heavy lifting. As the show progresses, I find myself wanting more interactions between Noah’s brother, Sasha (Timothy Simons), and Joanne’s sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe). That duo delivers some of the show’s best comedic moments.

What else should you watch on Netflix?
When someone asks what to watch on Netflix, I like to reply with, “How much time do you have?” You can always find something on Netflix. One of Netflix’s newest movies is Sacrifice, an interesting black comedy starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy. If that doesn’t pique your interest, try an engaging thriller like Animals.
